Nelson was raised in a very small town called Mong Cai (translated as Mango Street in Chinese) in Vietnam. Nelson and his family fled to Vietnam to escape the cruel practices of the Qing Dynasty of China such as foot binding. His grandmother strongly resisted oppressive cultural traditions like the foot binding and even joined rebellion groups during the Qing Dynasty. In Vietnam, floods were common. One time, his sister nearly drowned after getting swept into a river. He was taught values like resilience and survival from a young age from these experiences in his rural village. After leaving Vietnam for Taiwan, he took the university entrance exams and got in as an engineering major. Nelson came to the U.S. for graduate school after his friend recommended him to the University of Manitoba.

But trying to just trust the person, unless you prove otherwise and befriend with him or her is the right thing.
